From TV Sitcom Stars to Pop Rock Legends – The Incredible Story

In 1965, two TV producers had a crazy idea: create a band for a new sitcom that would be “The Beatles… but funny.” They held auditions, picked four talented young guys who barely knew each other, and The Monkees were born.
Micky Dolenz (the wild drummer and singer), Davy Jones (the cute British heartthrob), Michael Nesmith (the cool guitarist with the wool hat), and Peter Tork (the funny bassist) became overnight sensations when their show The Monkees hit NBC in September 1966.
At first, they were called “The Pre-Fab Four” – a manufactured band. Session musicians played on their early records while the guys just acted and sang. But the music was pure gold. Their first single “Last Train to Clarksville” shot to #1. Then came “I’m a Believer” (written by Neil Diamond) – one of the biggest songs of the entire 1960s. “Daydream Believer” followed, also hitting #1. Between 1966 and 1968 they had four straight #1 albums and sold over 75 million records worldwide.
The guys got tired of being puppets. In 1967 they fought for – and won – the right to play their own instruments. The album Headquarters proved they were a real band. They even made a wild psychedelic movie called Head (directed by Bob Rafelson) that is now considered a cult classic.
The TV show only lasted two seasons, but the music lived on. The Monkees pioneered the modern music video, mixed comedy with catchy pop, and influenced everyone from The Beatles to modern boy bands.
Tragedy hit later: Davy Jones passed away in 2012, Peter Tork in 2019, and Michael Nesmith in 2021. But Micky Dolenz – the last surviving Monkee – is still going strong at 80 years old. In 2026 he launched the “60 Years of The Monkees” tour, celebrating six decades of hits and memories across North America.
Today, The Monkees are no longer seen as a “fake” band. They are recognized as one of the most successful and fun pop groups of all time – proof that sometimes the best legends start as a joke on TV.

Still making people smile, 60 years later.
