My Sister Told Me Dad Was Gone—Then He Revealed a Family Truth

Why had someone created property documents?

Why was her address connected to the witness?

And most importantly, who had actually prepared the paperwork?

Dad picked up his coat.

“We need to go home.”

Harold stood.

“Why?”

“Because there may be something there we haven’t found.”

I looked at him.

“Dad, the sheriff is already there.”

“Exactly.”

He headed toward the door.

We followed.

When we arrived at the house, a sheriff’s vehicle was parked outside.

Vanessa and Grant were sitting in the living room.

They both looked exhausted.

A deputy stood near the hallway.

The sheriff approached Dad.

“Mr. Cole.”

“Yes?”

“We secured the documents.”

“Good.”

“There is something else you should know.”

Dad waited.

“We found another folder.”

“Where?”

“In your office.”

Dad frowned.

“I checked that room yesterday.”

“It was behind a drawer.”

Dad looked at me.

The sheriff handed him a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was a small envelope.

Dad recognized the handwriting immediately.

His face went pale.

“That’s not mine.”

I looked at the envelope.

The name written across the front was Vanessa’s.

But underneath it was another name.

Richard Bell.

Dad stared at it.

“What does it say?”

The sheriff answered.

“It appears to be a letter.”

Dad didn’t open it.

Instead, he looked at me.

Then at Harold.

Then back at the envelope.

“Maybe,” he said quietly, “we finally found the answer.”

The sheriff carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

He read the first few lines.

Then stopped.

“What?”

The sheriff looked at Dad.

“This letter says Vanessa wasn’t working alone.”

The room became completely silent.

Dad’s eyes narrowed.

“Who else?”

The sheriff looked down at the page.

Then he gave Dad the name.

Dad took one step backward.

I had never seen him react that way before.

“That’s impossible.”

Harold looked at him.

“Edward?”

Dad stared at the letter.

Then he whispered:

“I trusted that man.”

I looked between them.

“Who is he?”

Dad didn’t answer.

He simply stared at the name on the page.

And in that moment, I realized the mystery had become much bigger than a family argument over an inheritance.

Someone had been planning something.

Someone had access to information they should never have had.

And someone Dad trusted might have known about it from the beginning.
