This Oven-Baked Creamy Tomato Basil Chicken is the ultimate comfort meal—tender, juicy chicken baked in a rich, creamy tomato sauce infused with herbs. The combination of crushed tomatoes and cream creates a smooth, velvety topping that keeps the chicken moist while it cooks. Freshly grated Parmesan and a touch of red pepper flakes add a deep, savory flavor with just a hint of warmth, giving it that classic Italian-inspired taste.
Oven-Baked Creamy Tomato Basil Chicken
Ingredients:
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 2 lbs)
- 1 can (14½ oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1 cup heavy cream
- ½ cup finely grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 tbsp olive oil or melted butter
- 2 tsp dried basil
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp kosher salt (divided)
- ½ tsp black pepper (divided)
- ½ tsp red pepper flakes
- 1 tsp sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Dish
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Pat the chicken breasts dry and season both sides with half of the salt and pepper. Place them in a single layer in a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Step 2: Make the Sauce
In a bowl, mix together the crushed tomatoes, heavy cream, Parmesan, basil, garlic, red pepper flakes, olive oil, remaining salt and pepper, and sugar (if using). Stir until smooth and well combined.
Step 3: Assemble
Pour the sauce evenly over the chicken, making sure each piece is well coated.
Step 4: Bake Covered
Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 25 minutes. This helps the chicken cook gently and stay tender.
Step 5: Bake Uncovered
Remove the foil carefully and continue baking for another 15–20 minutes, until the chicken is fully cooked (internal temperature should reach 165°F / 74°C) and the sauce is bubbling and slightly thickened.
Step 6: Rest and Serve
Let the dish rest for 5–10 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to settle and thicken.
