So, should the bathroom door stay open or closed?
The best choice depends on your ventilation system. If your bathroom has an effective exhaust fan, keeping the door mostly closed while allowing replacement air to enter beneath it can help direct humid air outdoors without spreading steam throughout your home. The Home Ventilating Institute recommends running the fan during bathroom use and for at least 20 minutes afterward; longer may be necessary if moisture remains. If your bathroom lacks an exhaust fan, opening the door can improve airflow, particularly when paired with an open window or another way for humid air to escape outdoors. However, opening the door alone may simply transfer moisture into neighboring rooms. Avoid leaving the bathroom tightly sealed without adequate ventilation, and check that wet surfaces actually dry. Ultimately, the most important rule isn’t whether your door remains open or closed.
It’s making sure the moisture has a reliable way to leave your home
