I Left After My Sister Threw Coffee, Then Found My Name on Her Loan
In late October, my parents mailed me a box with some things I’d left behind. There was a sweater, a charger, and one of the old cracked mugs from the kitchen. It was not the mug Britney threw, which I knew because that one had a chip near the handle. I don’t know why my mother packed the mug. I held it for a minute, then set it on the shelf.
I still talk to June. I talk to Dale less. Britney and I exchange short messages on birthdays. We haven’t had another loan conversation. I don’t know if that counts as peace. It’s just quieter now, and I’m not the person trying to make the quiet mean everything is fine.
The bank’s final letter said there was no loan under my name. I put it in the folder with the urgent care summary and the picture of my cheek.
I kept the cracked mug on the shelf. I don’t drink from it.
