Five Minutes After My Divorce Dad Told Me to Change Every PIN

Then I found an email from Landon sent fourteen months earlier. The subject line read: *Something We Need to Discuss.*

I opened it. He had written that he felt invisible in my life. He said people treated him as though he were merely my husband instead of a successful man in his own right. He complained that I never gave him enough credit for supporting me. At the time, I had responded with a long apology. I had thanked him for his patience. I had promised to make more room for his ambitions.

Reading it now, I noticed something I had missed. At the bottom of the email, he had added a short paragraph.

*I have been looking at a few opportunities that could help us build a more independent future. I may need access to some old financial records, just to make sure everything is organized properly.*

I stared at the words. Then I searched for the phrase “independent future.” Three more emails appeared. One mentioned Richard Cole. Another referred to a consulting agreement. The third discussed an investment vehicle that Landon said would protect our shared assets from unnecessary taxes.

I read the messages twice. He had described the arrangement as something that would benefit both of us. But I couldn’t find any record that I had agreed to establish a separate company, authorize transfers, or engage a consultant.
