Cheddar Biscuits Recipe
Ingredients
| Ingredient | Quantity |
|---|---|
| All-purpose flour | 2 cups |
| Baking powder | 1 tablespoon |
| Fine salt | ½ teaspoon |
| Garlic powder | ½ teaspoon |
| Unsalted butter, cold and cubed | ½ cup (1 stick) |
| Sharp cheddar cheese, freshly shredded | 1 cup |
| Whole milk or buttermilk | ¾ cup |
| Unsalted butter, melted (for topping) | 2 tablespoons |
| Garlic, finely minced or pressed | 1 clove |
| Dried parsley or finely chopped fresh chives | ½ teaspoon |
Directions
Step 1: Prepare the Oven
Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Position a rack in the center of the oven and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 2: Combine the Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and garlic powder until thoroughly blended.
Step 3: Cut in the Butter
Add the cold butter cubes to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter, two forks, or your fingertips, work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with small pieces of butter still visible.
Baking Tip: Avoid overmixing. Small bits of cold butter are essential for creating light, flaky biscuits.
Step 4: Make the Dough
Add the shredded cheddar cheese and toss to combine. Pour in the milk or buttermilk and stir gently until the dough just comes together. The dough should look somewhat rough and uneven. Stop mixing as soon as there are no dry streaks of flour remaining.
Step 5: Shape and Bake
Using a large spoon or a ¼-cup scoop, drop 8 portions of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch of space between each biscuit.
Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the biscuits are puffed and golden brown on top and bottom.
Step 6: Add the Garlic Butter Topping
While the biscuits bake, combine the melted butter, minced garlic, and parsley or chives in a small bowl.
As soon as the biscuits come out of the oven, brush the warm tops generously with the garlic-herb butter mixture.
Serve immediately while warm and enjoy the melted cheddar in every bite.
Serving Suggestions
These cheddar biscuits pair wonderfully with soups, stews, chili, roasted meats, or can simply be enjoyed on their own as a savory snack.
