At First, I Thought It Was Trash—Then I Looked Closer

I went into my girlfriend’s bathroom one evening and noticed something unusual on the floor.

At first glance, it looked like a small piece of dark, rubbery debris. I assumed it might have fallen from an object or somehow been tracked in from outside. However, its unusual shape made me take a closer look.

After inspecting it more carefully, I realized it was alive.

Curious and slightly surprised, I researched what I had found and compared it with reliable identification resources. The answer appeared to be a leech, a type of segmented invertebrate commonly found in moist environments.

Although discovering one indoors can be unsettling, not all leeches pose a significant risk to people. Their presence may simply be related to moisture, standing water, pets, plants, or an accidental entry from outside.

If you find an unfamiliar creature in your home, it’s best to avoid handling it with bare hands until you know what it is. You can carefully contain it, clean the surrounding area, and check for possible entry points or sources of excess moisture.

The experience was certainly unexpected, but it also served as a reminder that even familiar spaces can occasionally surprise us. A quick inspection and reliable information can often turn a worrying discovery into a simple—and interesting—explanation.
