A Woman’s Husband Said He’d Forgotten His Passport at Home, So She Sent Her Mom to Get It While They Were at the Airport – Minutes Later, Her Mom Called and Whispered, ‘Honey, He Set You Up! Come Home Now!’
My husband suddenly announced he’d forgotten his passport just minutes before our anniversary flight.
I called my mother and asked her to check his bedside drawer. Twenty minutes later, she whispered, “Honey, he set you up! Come home now!” Then she sent me a photograph showing his passport beside a receipt stamped PAID IN FULL, with a collection deadline of 11 a.m. When I recognized the storage unit number on that receipt, my heart sank. My husband had arranged something behind my back involving the belongings my late father had left me—and he expected it all to happen while I was thousands of miles away…
“Babe, don’t panic, but I think I left my passport at home.”
I turned toward my husband, Dereck, convinced he was joking. We were standing inside a crowded airport, preparing to board a flight for the anniversary vacation we’d spent six months planning. Our departure was scheduled for shortly after nine, and we’d been looking forward to this trip for weeks.
“Dereck, please tell me you’re kidding.”
He searched his jacket pocket again, then checked his carry-on bag.
“I wish I were. I can’t find it anywhere.”
I took a breath and tried to think clearly. “Where did you last see it?”
“Probably in our bedroom. I’ll drive back and get it.”
I shook my head. “There’s no way you’ll make it back in time. My mother lives ten minutes from our house. I’ll ask her to bring it.”
His reaction was immediate.
“No, Sheila.”
I looked at him, surprised by the sharpness in his voice.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. I just don’t want to trouble Vivienne. I’ll take care of it.”
“Mom won’t mind. She knows how important this trip is.”
Before he could object again, I called her.
Mom answered cheerfully.
“Shouldn’t you two be on your way to paradise?”
“Not quite, Mom. Dereck forgot his passport. Would you mind checking his bedside drawer and bringing it to the airport?”
“Of course, sweetheart. I’ll leave right away.”
I thanked her and ended the call.
Dereck stood beside me, shifting his luggage from one shoulder to the other.
“She agreed?” he asked.
“Yes. Isn’t that great?”
“Sure,” he muttered.
But he didn’t look relieved.
At the time, I assumed he was simply embarrassed about forgetting such an important document.
Twenty minutes later, my phone rang again.
It was Mom.
“Did you find it?” I asked eagerly.
Instead of answering, she lowered her voice.
“Honey, where’s Dereck?”
“Standing right next to me.”
“Can he hear what I’m saying?”
Something about her tone made my stomach tighten.
I stepped a little farther away.
“No. Mom, what’s happened?”
She hesitated……………………CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE
