Old-Fashioned Butter Rolls

Ingredients:

For the Rolls:
Ingredient Quantity
Plain flour 2 cups
Salt A pinch
Shortening ⅔ cup
Ice water As needed
Softened butter For spreading
Sugar For sprinkling
For the Dip:
Ingredient Quantity
Milk 1 ½ cups
Sugar As needed (to taste)
Vanilla 1 teaspoon

Instructions:

  1. Step 1: Prepare the Dough: In a bowl, combine the flour and a pinch of salt. Cut in the shortening using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Stir in just enough ice water to form a stiff dough.
  2. Step 2: Roll & Fill: On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out very thin. Use a small saucer to cut the dough into rounds. Spread each round with softened butter, then sprinkle generously with sugar. Tightly roll each round into a log.
  3. Step 3: Bake the Rolls: Place the rolls in a buttered baking dish. Bake at 400°F (200°C) until they are slightly browned.
  4. Step 4: Prepare the Dip: While the rolls are baking, heat the milk in a small saucepan. Add enough sugar to make it sweet to your liking and stir in about a teaspoon of vanilla. The mixture should be very hot but not boiling.
  5. Step 5: Finish & Serve: Once the rolls are slightly browned, carefully pour the hot milk mixture over them. Return the dish to the oven for another 10-15 minutes. These rolls are best served warm.
